A History of Close Client Service

When founding our firm, Geoffrey P. Mahoney felt strongly that his law practice promised more than a job; it was a calling. The law offered the opportunity for service to his clients and the establishment of long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. His approach of doing the best job possible for reasonable price has brought about our reputation for ensuring clients' satisfaction.

Geoffrey P. Mahoney was a draper's clerk who emigrated from Ireland in 1909 at age 19. He obtained his civil engineering degree from the University of Minnesota and became a civil engineer for a railroad. He then went to night law school and in 1922 received his law degree from St. Paul College of Law, a predecessor of William Mitchell College of Law.

In 1922, Geoffrey P. Mahoney opened his law office in Minneapolis. From the beginning, his focus was on client service; he felt that a lawyer needed to define his personal sense of success in terms other than the fees charged for the services rendered.

Geoff got his start by handling Minneapolis and St. Paul litigation on behalf of clients who were referred to him by their insurers. Over the next 30 years the firm grew to Mahoney, Morrison, Cragg and Barnett.

Joined by his three sons, the law firm became a family affair. Geoffrey J. Mahoney was admitted in 1952, Richard Mahoney was admitted in 1957, and James Mahoney was admitted in 1965. In 1963, attorney Thomas E. Dougherty joined the firm and the name was changed to Mahoney, Dougherty and Mahoney. At the time of his retirement, Geoffrey P. Mahoney had established himself as an active litigator and appellate lawyer who had participated in over 150 appeals to the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1926 to 1959.

In 1975, our lawyers and staff moved to the firm's present address, 801 Park Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. On October 1, 1989, our firm merged with the Miller & Neary firm, which was founded in 1964. Miller & Neary's insurance practice dovetailed well with the practice of Mahoney, Dougherty and Mahoney, P.A., and added a wide range of practice areas for individuals and businesses.

The addition of the former Miller & Neary law firm in 1989 broadened the firm's practice substantially, bringing experience and expertise in a wide range of general practice areas, including insurance law, business and commercial law, workers' compensation, personal injury, employment law, commercial law, real estate (residential and commercial), and estate planning.

We look forward to serving your legal needs. Contact our Minneapolis law firm to arrange your consultation.
